Mrs. Coturnix had a birthday...
so her hubby and children decided to get something original for her. After family consultation, they chose butterflies as the theme, and left up to me to design the mirror frame, which I enjoyed. It is made of spruce and and has following Lepidoptera species Ornithoptera alexandrae, Phoebis philea, Graphium agamemnon, Panacea prola, Idea leuconoe, Philaethria dido, Danaus plexippus, Morpho polyphemus and Heliconius melpomene.
The signature individuals at the base of the mirror frame are pair of one of the largest and rarest butterflies in the world, Queen Alexandra's Birdwing, Ornithoptera alexandrae. With total of 27 eggs laid in the lifetime, this species is facing extinction due to human collection and the progressive loss of its habitat. You can see the details of the mirror frame with Birdwing in focus here.
